Mukesh Butani is a founding Partner of BMR Advisors. He specialises in International Tax and Transfer Pricing matters. He joined the Firm in September 2004 on its formation. Prior to BMR, he was the National Tax Director and International Tax Partner of Ernst & Young. He has extensive experience in fiscal, regulatory corporate and international tax matters working with several Fortune 500 multinationals as well as domestic companies in a wide range of industries. He particularly contributed to the development of the transfer pricing practice in both Andersen and Ernst & Young where he led the International Tax practice. He was head of the Oil and Gas industry practice at Andersen, a member of the core industry team at Ernst & Young and has deep experience in working with companies across the industry value chain from upstream companies to organisations engaged in mid-stream and down-stream activities. He also led the Japanese Business Services practice within both Andersen and Ernst & Young. He interacts regularly with regulators and the policy formulation functions within the Government and has been involved with a number of Mutual Agreement Proceedings involving US and Japanese companies doing business in India.

He has a Bachelor's degree in Commerce from Mumbai University and qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 1985. He joined Arthur Andersen in 1986 and was made Partner in 1995. He has authored a treatise on Transfer Pricing which has been published by LexisNexis Butterworths. He is a member on ICC, Paris' Taxation Commission and served as Chairman of the Tax & Tariff Committee of American Chamber of Commerce.

He has served as the Co-chairman of the Taxation Committee of the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI), an apex industry association and is actively associated with its India-Japan Joint Business Council. He was a member of the Committee on Accounting Standards for Exploration and Production of Hydrocarbons and on the committee established by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India to produce the Guidance Note on Transfer Pricing. He was member of the Empowered Committee on e-Commerce taxation established by the Government of India and has contributed extensively to the deliberations of the Kelkar Task Force on Direct Tax reforms, as well as the Task force on implementation of the Fiscal Responsibility and Budget Management Bill.

He is currently a member of Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) Business restructuring group and plays active role in ICC's task force on tax arbitration. The International Tax Review (ITR) Euromoney survey has consistently ranked him among the best tax advisors in India and this was confirmed by the ITR's World Tax Guide for 2006 and 2007.
